Thank you for being an animal lover!

At Suruluna, we are committed to the well-being of all dogs, particularly those who have difficult lives and few chances.

We provide a home for adoptable dogs, as well as those who will remain in our sanctuary.  We are committed to taking care of them as long as they need us to.

Our training methods are based on positive reinforcement with empathy and compassion for the animals, and based on the philosophy:

Every Life is Sacred

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for daily updates.

For a real treat, join our FB group, "Friends of Suruluna" to see stories from our adopters and share your own Rescue stories!

Suruluna Animal Rescue is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, and all donations are deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

"To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring– it was peace.“

About Our Founders

Anna Cilento and Mary Myers founded Suruluna in 2012 to create a place where dogs can be cared for and taught how to be good citizens.  They live with numerous wonderful rescued dogs and cats of their own.

Anna studied at the acclaimed Academy for Dog Trainers, founded by Jean Donaldson, and is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APTD).  She has worked with the SPCA for many years, socializing rescued dogs, matching dogs with their perfect human, and following up to help adopters address behavioral issues.

She also founded a volunteer running group for shelter dogs, so they can get some exercise, socialization and FUN.  In addition to a much needed treat for the dogs and the benefit of the physical activity, the experience of running with different volunteers in the world outside the shelter helps them increase their people skills, expand their experiences, and ultimately increases their chance of finding a forever home.

Anna also works with numerous partner organizations, focusing her time on helping them with their most challenging cases.

About Our Facility

Suruluna is located on 86 beautiful acres in the Catskills in New York.  In 2013, we purchased seven acres of land to create our first sanctuary, and in 2020 we were able to expand to our new location, where we provide a healing place for long-term sanctuary dogs.

Our new facility has allowed us to extend more services to more dogs. Miles of beautiful walking trails, special play areas, and the serenity of the countryside create a create a true Sanctuary space, for the healing and wellbeing of all our dogs.
